El Sapo (or, ‘The Toad’ as it translates to in Spanish), is a Cuban social club and bar that brings the energy and warmth of the Caribbean to the mid-Atlantic United States. As a Cuban-American myself, it always brings a grin to my face to see places like this popping up outside of my home state of Florida. All the things I love about my culture are represented here; our love of bright colors, our penchant for bad spanglish (‘un poquito fancy’, found on El Sapo’s menu, is something I could see a cousin of mine saying), and our love of huge get-togethers where we dance the night away, pictured here in a beautiful mural that frames the kitchen.
