Backward Flag Brewing Co is unique for a few reasons; it’s veteran and woman-owned, and was founded to help other veterans move forward in life. CODO worked closely with their team to not only brand the brewery, but to develop a special series of beers brewed to raise funds for veteran-owned charities across the U.S. The Forward Assual Series, as it is called, is nothing short of badass. The illustrations style across each can is gritty, dark and in your face, looking like it was collaged with dirty cut paper and spray paint. Each style of beer is brewed to conceptually align with the foundation that it is supporting. ‘Something’s Missing’, for example, is a 0 IBU IPA, lacking in bitterness completely. This concept of ‘something missing’ is also shown in the illustration, showing a skeletal soldier with a prosthetic leg. Upon reading about the foundation that this particular can is supporting (We Defy Foundation), you learn that they work specifically with disabled veterans to help them work through their physical and mental trauma. This connecting between messaging, imagery, brand and purpose is what makes this suite of can designs so impactful. As always, great work CODO.
