Named after the roadway that runs through the length of Argentina, R40 offers a rotating menu of Argentinian-inspired shareable plates, a backyard space, an underground wine cellar with more than 70 varieties and cocktails in the heart of Long Island City in Queens, NYC. Steve Wolf Designs translated head executive chef Giovanni Porto’s experiencing traveling through Argentina into their modern and clean identity. Steve Wolf Designs case study claims that this project is inspired by traditional Argentine design, but I was unable to find any reference and am not well-versed enough in that area of design to write on it. Interpreting the art as best I can, I see geometric takes on natural forms; the coaster seem to echo the shapes of sun rays, and may also suggest forests and mountain ranges. The matchboxes feature a more intricate pattern, resembling the irons on a hot stove or perhaps some interesting architectural tilework. It’s a beautiful identity, I just wish there was some more information.
