Baillie Street Merchants takes inspiration from Sri Lanka’s rich trading history, and interprets it as a suave, speakeasy-inspired bar and restaurant. Hidden behind a tea and coffee shop of the same name, Baillie Street Merchants is dark, moody, and refined. Studio Nice One looked to historical American restaurant designs of the 1920’s to inform the look, and paired with modern typefaces and a contemporary sensibility, nails the look. There are a lot of things I like about this project, but all of them have to do with the little details; the custom illustrations peppered across the menu system. The cocktail illustrations, and the drink menu for that matter, are the shining star here. The drink menu is structured more like a newspaper, with a mix of photography, illustration, long-form reading and short infographic-style snippets. It makes for an engaging read, something that their guest could immerse themselves in while sipping on their drink.
