Sweetie Salad is a restaurant in Beijing that is based on a skewed look at what goes into a picnic trip. It feels a little ‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’, with its oversized insect illustrations gracing the walls and its massive interpretation of gingham pattern. Typical picnic staples are not missing, however; you’ll find plenty of wooden picnic tables and greenery here. Gingham is also used more traditionally in the furniture, a mishmash of patterns and variations create a look that I call ‘refined-kitsch’. It’s a lovely, fresh perspective on an age-old American trope, revisited and rejuvenated for the Chinese audience.
